What is a care representative?

When an individual suffers from ill health, a mental condition, or a physical disability, we appoint a care representative.

How to appoint a care representative?

To appoint a care representative, one must apply to the courts on the individual’s behalf and provide two medical reports. Family members may need to be notified in writing or their written consent presented to the court.

Who can become a care representative?

Under the Nursing Home Support Scheme or Fair Deal Scheme, it is possible for a relative of a person needing long-term nursing home care to be appointed as a Care Representative.

Nursing home loan

The Care Representative will then have authority to consent to a nursing home loan in respect of the 5% contribution per annum to cost of care on land and property. This will allow deferring the contribution until the person needing nursing home care passes away. Under certain circumstances, you can defer the contribution further.
